OIE Reports Anthrax Outbreak in Botosani
ROMANIA - Dr Geronimo Raducu Branescu, President Secretary of State Chief Veterinary Officer, has reported an outbreak of Anthrax in cattle located in Botosani.A report was sent to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on Wednesday, 17 October, wherein the causal agent was found to be Bacillus Anthracis, after a bacteriological examination was carried out at the Institute of Diagnostic and Animal Health.
A total of 20 animals were found susceptible, out of which one case was identified. The affected animal was reportedly found dead as a result of the disease. None of the remaining 19 animals were killed and disposed of and/or slaughtered.
Some of the control measures that have been applied include official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste, selective killing and disposal and disinfection. Vaccination has also been permitted (if a vaccine exists).
The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
