Vets Push On-farm Biosecurity
CANADA – Promoting onfarm biosecurity is top of the agenda throughout Canada this week as routine veterinary exams are encouraged as a standard in care.

The message comes from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.
Together, the organisations are promoting farmer/vet cooperation to create biosecurity plans to prevent disease in flocks and herds.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative, Dr Ian Alexander, Chief Veterinary Officer has advised that new arrivals onfarm are isolated and tested before being introduced to the herd or flock.
Furthermore, farmers should note the importance of disinfection and cleanliness around the business and prevent rodent contact with animals.
"The practices collectively known as biosecurity are important to producers, and industry as a whole,” said Dr Ian Alexander.
"These simple, cost-effective measures, could also help Canada manage an incursion of an emerging or foreign animal disease, by helping limit the spread of disease and supporting re-entry into foreign markets."
