Almost 500,000 black and white bull calves a year are either slaughtered shortly after birth or sold to continental veal farms.

But after 18 months of talks animal welfare organisations, farmers and supermarkets have drawn up plans for a scheme which will see the calves reared for the domestic meat market.

They will be kept for 12-15 months on UK farms which have higher welfare standards than other EU countries before being slaughtered for the beef market.

The British beef industry is only 75 per cent self sufficient and it is hoped the new market will make up the 250,000 tonnes a year shortfall.

Beef from the calves will not be classified as prime meat but will instead go mainly for use in the food manufacturing industry and as 'economy' cuts on supermarket shelves.
