USDA rejects calls to test younger cows

Mad cow disease unlikely to show up before 30-month cutoff, agency says. Amid calls for more testing in the wake of the nation's first case of mad cow disease come key questions with no uniform answers: At what age should animals be tested and exactly how many tests are enough?
Citizen and consumer groups say the country should target testing of younger animals -- cows 20 months and older -- as the best way to detect all possible cases of mad cow disease.
