Variety comparison of sorghum in the Netherlands and Belgium
Sorghum is in the spotlight on dairy farms as the third crop next to grass and maize. The results of a 2019 variety comparison are discussed in an article in V-focus.In the Public Private Partnership Sorghum (2019-2022), financed by ZuivelNL, Dairy Fund and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, the perspectives of sorghum are explored and research is conducted into the cultivation and nutritional aspects of dairy cattle.
In addition, in 2019, in collaboration with the agricultural research in Belgium, seven sorghum varieties were compared with each other on dry matter yield, starch content and in vitro digestibility.
The differences in yield between the sorghum varieties were small, but large differences in the starch content were found. This is partly caused by differences in ripening between the varieties.
