Milei slashes export taxes on key farm Argentine products
Cuts apply to beef, poultry, soy, corn and more to boost economyArgentine President Javier Milei announced on Saturday a reduction in export taxes on poultry and beef, soybeans and derivatives, corn, sorghum and sunflowers, a measure requested by the southern country's agricultural sector, reported Reuters.
Milei stated that the announced reductions will be permanent and "result in a 20% reduction in export taxes for grain supply chains; and a 26% reduction in export taxes for livestock and meat."
Export taxes on poultry and beef will be reduced from 6.75% to 5%; export taxes on corn from 12% to 9.5%; export taxes on sorghum from 12% to 9.5%. Sunflower withholding taxes will go from 7.5% to 5.5%, soybean withholding taxes from 33% to 26%, and soybean byproducts from 31% to 24.5%, Milei said.
"The reduction in withholding taxes will not only benefit the countryside but the entire economy," Milei said in a speech at the opening of the exhibition at the Argentine Rural Society.
"We seek to boost the countryside, which has been severely punished by these taxes over the last 20 years," he noted, adding that "eliminating withholding taxes is an obsession for our administration, and we have made a lot of progress in that direction."
The libertarian president took office in December 2023 with the promise of getting the economy back on track, ending the scourge of inflation, and balancing the public accounts.
"It's important to keep in mind that this (the reduction in taxes) is solely thanks to the fiscal surplus we've achieved, which we've safeguarded like water in the desert in the face of the systematic attacks of the political class," Milei said.
