New fears arise over human form of BSE

UK - Thousands of Britons could be harbouring the human form of mad cow disease, according to government research published today. Scientists examining 12,674 stored appendix and tonsil samples said they had identified three bearing signs of the agent that causes variant CJD. After applying their findings on a population-wide basis, they estimate that about 3,800 people in the UK could be carrying vCJD.
