Japan open to relaxing mad cow testing standards

US - The announcement Friday by Japan's agricultural minister that his country may be willing to propose relaxing testing standards for mad cow disease is good news, said U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. The Japanese agriculture and health ministries submitted a proposal to the state-appointed Food Safety Commission to exempt cows 20 months or younger from testing.
