Beef industry plays BSE waiting game

CANADA - Plans to reopen the U.S. border to live Canadian cattle in March are being met with local skepticism. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced last Thursday that Canada is now considered a minimal-risk country, meaning the U.S. could once again receive imported Canadian cattle under 30 months old and beef products from animals over 30 months. Canadian producers could begin export as early as March 7, but many are taking a wait-and-see approach.
