OIE Reports FMD Outbreaks in Myanmar
MYANMAR - Dr Ye Tun Win, Chief Veterinary Officer Director General at the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department has reported a cluster of foot and mouth disease outbreaks in Rakhine State.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 24 May 2018, stating that the outbreak was initially observed on 13 May and confirmed on 17 May.
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test was carried out at the Foot and mouth disease laboratory in Yangon on 24 May.
According to the report, a total of five outbreaks took place, affecting cattle. A total of 1500 animals were found susceptible, out of which 97 cases were reported. No deaths have been reported and none of the affected animals were killed or disposed of.
While the source of the outbreaks is not exactly clear, contact with infected animal(s) at grazing/watering appears to be the most likely cause.
The OIE reports that according to the National foot and mouth disease laboratory, the serotype has been confirmed as "O".
Township Veterinary Officer and staff, and Community animal health workers also went to the infected villages for disease control, vaccination and investigation.
Some of the control measures that have been applied include:
- Movement control inside the country,
- Vaccination in response to the outbreak(s),
- Surveillance within containment and/or protection zone,
- Quarantine and
- Disinfection
None of the affected animals received treatment.
The OIE reports that zoning is another control measure to be further applied.
