Bluetongue Returns in Romania

ROMANIA – Bluetongue has returned to Romania, hitting several farms in the north east of the country.

A total of eighteen cases of serotype four have been confirmed since initial notification was given on September 7 – the same strain that decimated the Balkans region this time last year.

The latest outbreak, dated 18 September, has 28 cattle susceptible and is the fourth farm to become infected. 

Movement restrictions have been imposed on the small holder cattle operations involved in in the Botosani region, close to the Moldovan border.

Hungary has also been confirmed with Bluetongue on two larger holdings this month. At the time of reporting, the serotype was unknown by the World Organisation for Animal Health.
