The decline, which was driven by depreciation in milk powders, takes the index to the lowest levels charted in ten years.

The auction reported declines for all products barring Lactose, which stayed level, and Cheddar, which edged 0.2 per cent higher.

Skim Milk Powder was back 14.4 per cent on the prior result and Whole Milk Powder slipped 10.3 per cent.

Market analysts at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) noted a 20 per cent drop in buyers participating in the auction compared to the same time last year.

AHDB Dairy said: “Volumes offered at the auction increased in line with seasonal patterns, but buyer interest remains weak.”
