New requirements will see cow shelters set up for unproductive cattle, announced chief minister for Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis.

Speaking at the opening of the Board, Mr Fadnavis said: “Don't look at prevention of cow slaughter just as beef ban. Cows are live animals and have emotions.

“One can't see a cow in an insensitive manner like just beef. Cow and its progeny is important in terms of milk, urine and cow dung.

“I don't look at prevention of cow slaughter from a religious point of view, but scientifically, which has got approval of the Constitution of India.”

In March, Mahrashtra outlawed bull and bullock slaughter, with fines of $155 and five years’ imprisonment.
