The AHDB Mastitis Control Plan is an evidenced-based, collaborative approach to controlling mastitis, which affects, on average, between 47 and 65 per cent of cows each year.

Costs for bought items like feed, fuel and medicines are "felt directly" by producer, explains AHDB Dairy, but the cost of sub-optimal health and production is harder to gauge.

Clinical mastitis reduction has been close to 30 per cent on herds that fully complied with the control plan.

An AHDB press release said: "The key benefits of the plan are – it’s evidence based, meaning the plan is based on the most up to date mastitis research, it’s tailored to each individual farm, tools are provided for plan deliverers to make farm-specific calculations of current mastitis costs and the potential savings after implementing the control measures."
