2.5 Million Colombian Cattle to Be Traceable by 2016
COLOMBIA – A national cattle traceability programme is reigniting efforts to expand its database with a view to ship more bovine product overseas.

The Institute of Colombian Agriculture (ICA) aims to grow its herd coverage by 230,000 head within the Atlantic region and to 2.5 million nationally by the end of the year.
Cattle enrolment reached 811,348 head last year.
The agricultural ministry hopes to “increase profitability” within the sector by opening the doors of international markets.
Developed with help from the US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA, APHIS), the tool will assist in disease eradication and control, said the ICA.
“The goal is to have a database with history of the animal and locations of the animal at farm, slaughter and final consumer stages,” said ICA spokesperson Martinez Lacouture.
