Farmers to Receive Discount Cattle Feed As Drought Measure

29 April 2014

COLOMBIA – An emergency initiative is offering farmers cattle feed at almost third below market value to ranchers in Colombia's drought hit regions.

A total of 2,314 tons of supplements is to be provided at 32 per cent below market value, available to Atlántico, Magdalena, Córdoba, Cesar, Guajira, Arauca and Casanare farmers.

“The bill seeks to maintain food security in drought affected areas with high cattle numbers,” said the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) general manager, Luis Humberto Martinez Lacaouture.

“We are also aiming to protect our sector’s competitiveness and stabilise feed prices at a regional level," he added.

Funding will be drawn from the ICA, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the National Federation of Ranchers (FEDEGAN), of which 70 per cent is allocated for ‘small farmers’ with 1-50 cows.

The remaining 30 per cent is for larger holdings. All transporting costs will be paid by FEDEGAN.
