An ambitious system will individually log every animal on a central database, tracking movement to farms and slaughter houses via an electronic chip.

“We are the most experienced country in our region regarding cattle traceability,” said Juan Carlos, head of cattle traceability at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Increasing traceability harmonizes the cattle sector with international markets, particularly the European Union, he added.

Moreover, it strengthens disease, food safety and border management mechanisms.
