The EU committee reacted positively when reasoned with by the agriculture Minister Miguel Arias Cañete for the implementation of short-term emergency measures to support dairy farmers.

The separate amounts per farm are still to be confirmed by national Royal Decree although they are to amount to 4-5 euros per tonne up to a limit of 305,000 tonnes produced. The payment is linked to size of holdings with hectares declared on each farm in payment applications being used to gauge subsidies.

This funding is expected to be demanding on bureaucratic resources as producers who failed to present their payment application for 2012 or need to review their hectares will need to submit another application by January 31 2013.
