US - Cows that had been pushed to the limit on a Californian ranch are now in excellent health after a rescue strategy incorporating Copasure boluses.

Will Ingram believes some of his cows would have died without the bolus. “They had been stressed about as hard as a cow could be stressed and still stay alive," he recalled.

“The cattle were in bad shape and Copasure was part of our strategy to get them right. I think they could have died without it. They never would have turned around in the condition they were in. I think the likelihood of deaths would have been high if they had not had Copasure."

Will runs a herd of cows and yearling replacements in Santa Ynez. He previously used copper injections but said the effects did not last long.

“It seemed we got a fast reaction but no long term effects," he admitted. “The copper boluses seemed to have the longest effect of all."

In Santa Ynez, copper supplementation is a must. “There is no way around it, it doesn’t pay to go any other way. Aside from feed it is the most important thing we give these cattle," said Will.

He weans his cattle in late March and sells the calves mostly to private buyers although some are sold through the local livestock market. The stock are bolused in January. “We try to get more gain and healthier cattle," said Will.
