Verne Thacker, who runs the Vet Village Veterinary Clinic in Lompoc, California, said copper levels in the area were very low and, without supplementation, livestock health would be severely compromised.

He has noticed a particular problem in sheep and goats. “We see a lot of down kids in herds that aren’t getting copper supplementation," he said.

Mr Verne described copper as a vital trace element.

“Any herd that’s not using it is usually having some trace element problems, you see it in the overall body condition."

Supplementation through boluses such as Copasure will improve youngstock growth rates, he added.

“By doing this you are probably going to have bigger calves in the end," said Mr Verne.
