NZ/India Talks Stall Over Dairy Trade

27 July 2012

GLOBAL - The proposed free trade agreement between India and New Zealand has stalled, with negotiations on dairy products being the concern.

The Economic Times of India reports that the Indian government has not yet agreed to make any offers on agricultural or dairy sectors.

The agreement is important for India, who hopes to gain more work visas for its professionals. However the announcement that India is not yet ready to talk about access to the agricultural markets has left New Zealand dissapointed.

A spokesperson from the Indian Commerce Ministry said that they could not have made any agreements on agricultural or dairy products without first consulting the agricultural and food ministers.

The Economic Times of India reports that India has not yet given any significant concession in dairy to any of its other FTA partners including Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka and the Asean.
