Great Yorkshire Show to Go Ahead

UK - The Great Yorkshire Show will go ahead but visitors should be aware that car parking on the showground is much reduced due to the recent heavy rain. Work is continuing around the clock to try to improve parking areas.

Chief Executive Nigel Pulling said: “We’ve never cancelled the Great Yorkshire Show because of the weather and have no plans to do so. Everyone is very aware of the difficulties the rain has caused up and down the country and our ground is also suffering from the wet. We are working around the clock with the aim of getting people here as quickly and safely as possible. The showground itself is holding up extremely well with many exhibitors’ stands in place however, our car parking adjacent to the site will definitely be much reduced.

He added: “Since last year’s Great Yorkshire Show we have spent around £450,000 on improvements around the site, including the drainage which has helped.”

Recent measures include improving vehicle access at the gateways, and stoned tracks across the fields, buying trackway, sand, and ground guards, and even using miscanthus, the low energy crop to soak up standing water. Tractors will also be on standby around the site.

“We would urge people to think about car sharing or using public transport,” said Mr Pulling. “We have increased the number of free shuttle buses which will run from Harrogate Railway station. Northern Rail is using all its available rolling stock and is putting on extra services and carriages and that is a very practical and sensible way to come to the Show.”

The show is on from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 July 2012. More information can be found here: http://www.greatyorkshireshow.co.uk/html/home/
