This means that it is a legal requirement to report all cases of Schmallenberg.

Germany has seen the highest cases of Schmallenberg since the outbreak last year. There are now over 1000 cases of Schmallenberg reported in Germany alone.

It is hoped that by making the disease notifiable, veterinary authorities will be able to better monitor the spread of the disease and take more preventative control measures.

Whilst the disease is also notifiable in the Netherlands, there are no plans to make it such in other EU countries.
