Revelations abound in BSE case

OREGON - Like a penitent at the confessional, USDA Secretary Mike Johanns and key staff members talked last week of trouble within the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s BSE surveillance program. On June 24, retesting of brain tissue samples confirmed the second U.S. case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
The revelations came tumbling out as Johanns, John Clifford, the USDA chief veterinarian, and Danny Matthews, head of the international BSE reference laboratory in Weybridge, England, talked by telephone with reporters.
