Ecuador to Buy 10 Million Doses of FMD Vaccines

ECUADOR - Ecuador plans to purchase 10 million doses of foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccinations for livestock this year.

p align="justify">According to the Andes, teh first phase of the vaccination is scheduled for May and the second in November.

Last year 4.5 million head of livestock were vaccinated. The Ministry of Agriculture is looking to increase this number substantially in 2012.

According to national statistics there are over five million head of cattle in Ecuador. A budget of $12 million has been set aside for 2012 vaccines, with producers expected to pay $0.30 per vaccine.

The government is also looking at changing the current animal movement laws, to prevent sick animals from moving and spreading disease.
