Zambia Reports FMD Outbreak

ZAMBIA - The Zambian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Northern Mwamba Kaka.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Saturday, 3 March. The affected cattle consist of cattle traditionally managed by peasant farmers in village settings.

A total of 6733 susceptible cattle, 30 cases were identified. No deaths occurred, and no animals were destroyed.

Introduction of new live animals, illegal movement of animals and contact with infected animal(s) at grazing or watering have been identified as the main sources of the outbreak.

Due to the control measures put in place, the outbreak has been contained in the Mwamba Kaka area of Mbala District.

Laboratory confirmation is awaited.
