A group of about 40 protesters chanted slogans and waved banners as the NFU delegates arrived.

Police and convention officials prevented the protestors entering the International Convention Centre in the heart of Birmingham.

The protestors were campaigning against the coming cull of badgers in two trial areas as part of government measures to help reduce the threat of bovine TB in the UK.

The cull has been backed by the National Farmers Union.

The conference opened with a key note speech from the NFU president Peter Kendall and will hear speeches from the Environment Secretary Caroline Spellman and the EC agriculture commissioner Dacian Ciolos.
