EDA Policy Conference on Saturated Fat
EU - The European Dairy Association (EDA) is organising a policy conference on saturated fat in Brussels. Both scientists and EU policy makers will speak on this event about the new scientific developments and how to align the public health policies with these new developments.
The topics to be covered are: What are the health effects of fatty acids in dairy? Does the saturated fat in dairy products have a negative
effect on a person’s health? Which level of intake should we recommend? What role should public policy play in
advising EU consumers?
The European Dairy Association is hosting a policy conference on saturated fat that will allow EU and national
policy makers, scientists, dairy producers and other stakeholders alike to hear new scientific developments and
to engage in a constructive discussion.
This policy conference will take place in Brussels on February 8
th between 3 and 6 pm.
In the first part of the conference, Professor Astrup from the University of Copenhagen will
discuss whether we should change our current paradigm on saturated fat based on new science. Professor
Givens from the University of Reading will present scientific evidence for the value of dairy products for health.
The last speaker Mrs de Lange, MEP, will discuss how to align policies directed on the health of the EU
consumer with the scientific developments.
In the panel discussion, the speakers will be joined by Mrs Bodenbach from DG Sanco, Professor Huyghebaert
from the University of Ghent and Mr Damiens from the European Milk Forum.
“The issues surrounding saturated fat are very complex, especially as new research keeps uprooting what we
currently know about this topic. We see this policy conference as a long needed opportunity for all stakeholders
to put their knowledge and expertise together and to engage in a constructive debate on EU health policy,” says
Joop Kleibeuker, Secretary General of the EDA.
