Yardings bounce back

National cattle yardings at physical markets reported by MLA’s NLRS increased 28 per cent, as supplies lifted in every state.

A combination of the warmer weather and strong prices has resulted in cattle numbers expanding, as producers take advantage of the favourable trading conditions. Queensland throughput lifted 29 per cent and NSW consignments jumped 23 per cent.

It was a similar trend in Victoria, with supply up 27 per cent, while in SA numbers increased 25 per cent. WA throughput was 63 per cent higher after numbers were greater at Muchea.

Top quality cattle

The quality of young cattle was again good to excellent, with ample numbers of yearling trade cattle supplementary fed or crop finished. The condition of heavy grown steers also stood out, with several drafts in Southern Queensland outstanding in quality.

After Tuesday’s markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was 4¢ for the week on 405.5¢/kg cwt – with the EYCI returning to levels not witnessed since March 2011.
