CME: EU Milk Deliveries Up Through July

GLOBAL - July milk deliveries in the EU-27 were up three per cent from a year ago after slower growth (+0.6 per cent) in May and June, writes Alan Levitt.

In the first seven months of the year, milk deliveries were up 2.2 per cent, an additional 3.9 billion lbs. of milk compared with last year.

The greatest increases this year have been in France, Germany and Ireland.

This extra milk has mostly gone into skim milk powder. SMP production in the January-July period was up 12.0 per cent. As a result, the European Union’s SMP exports were up 28 per cent in the first eight months of the year.

Milk supplies also are heavy in New Zealand and Argentina. New Zealand output was up 12.1 per cent (+1.8 billion lbs. of milk) in the first seven months of the year and Argentina production was up 14.7 per cent (2.0 billion lbs. of milk) in the first eight months of the year.

However, a natural gas leak on New Zealand’s north island today has resulted in closure of 15 Fonterra plants and subsequent dumping of an estimated 30 million liters of milk per day.

CWT accepted bids to provide export assistance on sales of 3.9 million lbs. of cheese for delivery through March. Year-to-date acceptances total 78.9 million lbs.
