NFU Subcommittee To Examine Dairy Proposal
US - The National Farmers Union (NFU) has formed a subcommittee of its Board members to examine the organisation’s dairy policy.

Since it has become evident that dairy legislation could move in the US House of Representatives prior to the 2012 Farm Bill, Board members will evaluate where organisational policy overlaps and is supportive of the proposed legislation. The subcommittee is also tasked with suggesting adjustments to the legislation that would be needed to gain support from NFU’s grassroots membership.
“Foundation for the Future, a proposal from the National Milk Producers Federation, is the most detailed proposal out there and will be the basis of this legislation,” said NFU President Roger Johnson. “The ongoing dairy crisis has made it necessary that we do something to provide a safety net for dairy producers, but we must be sure that we are doing the right thing to help all family farm dairies.”
Mr Johnson said that a key aspect that NFU members would like to see included in the dairy legislation is supply management.
“Supply management has always been, and will continue to be, a key component of the NFU dairy policy,” said Mr Johnson. “As we look at the proposed legislation, it is our goal to find as many places as possible that we can work together with the proposed dairy legislation. The goal is to ensure our dairyman do not have another crisis like the one we have had the past few years and help them weather future downturns in the market. While costs are a major factor, they are not the only one. Our subcommittee will take a detailed look at the proposal to ensure that it will work for all dairy producers, and not just a select few.”
