Calls For Minimum Farmgate Price

11 May 2011

AUSTRALIA - With the second interim report released earlier this week regarding the impacts of supermarket price decisions on the dairy industry, participators of the Senate economics committee conducting the inquiry called for a floor milk price to be introduced immediately.

Independent senator Nick Xenophon, Liberal senator Bill Heffernan, Nationals senator John Williams and Greens senator Christine Milne said that a floor price should be implemented for domestic drinking milk supply as an urgent interim measure.

They stressed that producers muts be protected "given the disparity of the bargaining powers between the dairy farmers and processors on the one hand, and the major supermarket chains on the other".
