The Roadmap has been published by the Dairy Supply Chain Forum’s Sustainable Consumption and Production taskforce which is chaired by DairyCo and on which the NFU is a lead partner.

The Roadmap, first published in 2008, set out a number of targets for the dairy sector, in reducing its environmental burden, though efficiency gains and other measures. The NFU is delighted that its members have taken these challenges and targets head on and in many cases improved on them.

NFU chief dairy adviser Robert Newbery said: “The NFU set its members these challenges back in 2008, so I am delighted now to see just how successfully British dairy farmers have improved their environmental performance. Many of these improvements represent efficiency gains, which will have positive impacts on the bottom line of farming business although most require investment.

“Food security, productivity and environmental performance are all challenges that require whole chain solutions. Society has challenged the farming industry to produce more while impacting less. The latest report of the Dairy Roadmap shows that dairy farmers are well placed to deliver on this commitment and are already making great strides forward.”
