Light at end of tunnel for older beef cattle

UK - Expectations have been mounting in the farming and processing sectors that, after almost ten years, beef from cattle aged over 30 months of age might be allowed back into the human food chain. There has been a succession of false dawns over the past three years but farmers will have to remain patient, judging from a public meeting staged in Edinburgh yesterday by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which will shortly make its deliberations clear to government ministers. BSE was linked with variant CJD, a horrible and untreatable disease, which has killed 156 young people, 23 in Scotland, in the past ten years.
