Taiwan Confirms FMD Outbreak
TAIWAN - Taiwan's epidemic prevention authority, on 23 March, confirmed that 999 pigs infected with foot and mouth disease (FMD) have been culled and slaughtered - making this the most serious FMD outbreak in the past three years on Penghu Island.

According to Xinhuanews, an additional 3,000 pigs have been quarantined in Taiwan.
No infected pigs have been found in the market so far. While epidemic prevention officers in Penghu examine cows, sheep and other livestock for infection, officers on Taiwan will conduct mass screening of all livestock.
Taiwan's cloven hooves production has been restricted for export since 1997 when a massive FMD epidemic impacted the country.
