FMD Appears in DPRK

NORTH KOREA - A serious outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has occurred on livestock farms over eight cities and provinces in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

According to KCNA, the disease has spread to eight cites and provinces in the country, including South Phyongan Province, North Phyongan Province, North Hwanghae Province, Jagang Province and Kangwon Province, since the first case was reported in Pyongyang at the end of last year.

The most seriously affected areas are Pyongyang, North Hwanghae Province and Kangwon Province.

The O type of foot-and-mouth disease appeared in cooperation farms, dairy farms and pig farms in those areas. More than 10,000 cattle, milk cows and pigs were infected and thousands of them have died.

The DPRK has established a National Emergency Epidemic Prevention Committee headed by Kim Rak Hui, vice-premier of the cabinet.

An official of DPRK's Agricultural Ministry told local media that the government has quarantined and disinfected the area of disease, and measures have been taken to counter the outbreak.

Meanwhile, markets and stores have stopped selling meat products of those animals.

It was reported that the DPRK has informed the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations about the disease and asked for emergency assistance.
