Pushing For A Department For Primary Industries

10 February 2011

NEW ZEALAND - Federated Farmers, having called for a Ministry for Primary Industries at its National Council last November, is delighted the Prime Minister now suggests it is a distinct possibility.

“A Ministry for Primary Industries makes logical sense,” says Don Nicolson, Federated Farmers President.

“The Prime Minister has seemingly confirmed on The Farming Show that there are not only synergies but genuine savings to be had from a primary sector super ministry.

“The thing Federated Farmers wants to see is a ministry for primary industries than being a ministry of it. We’re seeking a partner in Government that is for primary industries that shares our passion and enthusiasm.

“Federated Farmers is keen to take agriculture forward in all of its guises.

“A Ministry for Primary Industries reflects increasing integration. In the last few months fisheries based Talley’s Group has moved to take over the meat processor, AFFCO.

“Federated Farmers believes aquaculture is an important part of the future of fisheries and aquaculture is a farming discipline. 20 percent of the diet for some 2.6 billion people is made up of fish protein.

“By aligning all primary industries in a super Ministry for Primary Industries, Federated Farmers believes it will contribute towards a more cohesive, progressive and export-led primary sector.

“It’s also very positive to see Government backing Federated Farmers by seriously investigating a Ministry for Primary Industries,” Mr Nicolson concluded.
