The plans focus on addressing the power imbalance between retailers and producers in the food chain, as well as preparing producers for the end of milk quotas in 2015.

UFU Dairy Policy Committee Chairman William Cromie said: “The UFU is pleased to see the EU Commission recognising farmers’ important role in the food chain and proposing plans to tackle the issue of inadequate returns for farmers.

"The UFU has had considerable input into the development of these plans.

"We submitted responses to all of the EU High Level group meetings and Andrew Addison, Vice Chair of the Dairy Policy Committee, attended one of the High Level meetings back in March and regularly attended COPA advisory meetings.

“However, these plans are not a solution to the overall problem. We still have a dysfunctional supply chain and without meaningful market support measures farmers will still see their profit margins being squeezed.”
