Discussing A Dedicated Milk Supply

UK - "Extremely productive" talks have taken place between the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and The Co-operative Group about the retailer establishing a dedicated relationship with its dairy suppliers and to discuss issues raised in the NFU's Survival Plan for British Dairying.

Speaking after the meeting, NFU dairy board chairman, Gwyn Jones said: "I am delighted to be able to report that The Co-operative is committed to establishing a dedicated relationship with its milk suppliers. The Co-operative appears very sympathetic to the current dairy situation and has informed me that it will begin developing plans to set up closer relationships with its suppliers when its integration of Somerfield is at a sufficiently advanced stage.

"Time, of course, is of the essence. However, The Co-operative has a massive integration project underway and this is their immediate priority. The important thing is that The Co-operative recognises its responsibility, accepts the challenges laid down by the NFU in its Vision document and Survival Plan, and plans to act.

"We have offered our support to The Co-operative while it develops its model and we await further details with interest."
