Set up through the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Agency of Sri Lanka, e-Dairy is designed to use technology to improve the lifestyle of the poor communities that account 70 per cent of the country's population reports The Daily News.

This pilot project is attempting to use current trends of the community, using SMS in their day to day needs, to bridge the existing gaps of the extension services.

Use of the web is also hoping to make the younger generation aware of the prospects of the dairy industry as an acceptable enterprise.

The website offers news and practical advice to farmers, as well as the opportunity to chat with other producers.

Dairy farming, which The Daily News says is the most common acceptable secondary income generation activity has been considered as a characteristic feature in developing the rural sector and as a tool in eradicating poverty.

Despite 230,000 small dairy farmers influencing the entire milk processing process, it is still not considered as a viable enterprise by many people.

Farmers are hoping to emphasise the role that the dairy industry can play in local economic development such as creating a healthy workforce and population.
