To build a wealthy nation, the foundation needs to be a healthy nation flowing with the honey of fresh milk, says the DailyMirror. According to the news organisation, Sri Lanka will then have not only a healthy nation but also provide tens of thousands of new job opportunities especially to the village folk including the youth.

One of Sri Lanka’s highest qualified nutritionists, Dr. Damayanthi Perera, says that milk is essential for growth of marginally stunted or undernourished children. She has conducted a difficult, multi interventional trial in 36 low income pre schools in the Kurunegala district where the growth promoting effects of protein, energy, calcium, zinc and skimmed milk powder was tested.

Skimmed milk was used as a ‘Test Food’ that contained all three nutrients. Calcium promoted the highest height velocity in the study of children. Calcium was also the most limiting study-nutrient in the diet of children (Dietary Study), which corroborated the results of the intervention trial.

The research findings of this nutritionist along with other international research data, demonstrate that it is not necessary to add extra vitamins and minerals to milk and milk products.

Sri Lanka has only marginal under nutrition, except in certain under-privileged communities.
