Oz Cattle and Indonesian Appetite Break Records

05 January 2009

AUSTRALIA - Indonesian demand for Australian cattle has started the year with a record all time high, helping the industry shrug off concerns over the economic crisis.

More than 530,000 head of cattle went to Indonesia last year, a 40 per cent increase since 2006, reported The West.

Livestock exporter Wellard Rural Exports loaded 2700 head on to livestock carrier MV Becrux at Fremantle yesterday to go to feedlots in Indonesia as part of its rapid expansion into the market.

Managing director Steve Meerwald said although Indonesia’s currency had fallen in the past six weeks, putting pressure on prices for cattle, demand remained strong and there was little sign of that slowing.

With a population of 220 million and more people turning to protein sources such as beef as their wealth increased, future growth in Indonesia was promising.
