Gordon Brown Urged to Support Dairy Industry
IRELAND, UK - The Ulster Farmers’ Union has welcomed the intervention of Northern Ireland’s First and Deputy First Ministers, as the campaign continues to get EU dairy export refunds re-instated.

This week the First and Deputy First Ministers have written to Prime Minister Gordon Brown, urging him to ensure the UK Government supports the local dairy industry in its efforts to persuade the EU Commission to re-introduce dairy export refunds.
UFU Deputy President John Thompson said: “The dairy market is in crisis and we have been seeking the support of the Stormont Executive as the industry lobbies for export refunds. It is heartening to see the First and Deputy First Minister intervening and explaining the seriousness of the situation to the Prime Minister. The dairy sector employs thousands of people on farms and in milk processing plants across Northern Ireland. It is very important that the DEFRA Minister also supports our case in Europe”.
The UFU says the issue will be discussed at a meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers in Brussels today (Friday 28 November).
