Thai FDA to Closely Monitor Chinese Dairy Imports

THAILAND - The Thai Food and Drug Administration’s have made notifications prohibiting the production, import and sale of food contaminated with melamine and melamine analogs.

The Thai Ministry of Public Health released a publication stating that "as there are thousands of infant illnesses and some deaths associated with the consumption of foods suspected of containing melamine and melamine analogs in many countries, it is necessary to provide the consumers’ safety protection on food consumptions."

As a result, Thailand have now issued a new regulations under which the Thai FDA will allow no more than 1 ppm of melamine or melamine analogs in modified milk for infants, modified milk of follow up formula for infants and children, whole milk powder, partly skimmed milk powder, skimmed milk powder, filled whole milk powder, and filled partly skimmed milk powder.

Additionally, no more than 2.5 ppm is allowed for milk containing food products.

They have also said that importers sourcing milk and food containing milk products from China must present melamine and melamine analogs testing results to the Thai FDA for every product shipment.

However, this regulation does not impact imports of milk and food containing milk from other countries.
