Shipments to Indonesia during February reached 42,962 head, up 90% on the same period last year (22,557 head). While exports to Indonesia are traditionally slower during the earlier months of the year, exports for the first two months of 2008 are up 53% on the same period in 2007, at a record 81,363 head. Contributing to the increased shipments so far in 2008 has been a steady supply of suitable cattle, particularly out of the dry areas of northern Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Libya was the second largest market for Australian cattle during February, receiving 8,959 head. While trade between Australian and Libya was halted between 1999 and 2007, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries saw trade resume last year. During 1997 and 1998, Libya was a large market for Australia cattle, receiving 105,000 head and 121,000 head, respectively.

Other markets to receive shipments during February included Israel (2,800 head), Malaysia (1,566 head) and Japan (1,499 head). Dairy cattle exports for the month totalled 5,737 head, with both the Russian Federation (2,780 head) and China (2,112 head) receiving increase shipments.
