Dairy, and the Fight Against Obesity

UK - Levels of obesity have tripled in England since 1980 and there is no sign of the upward trend stopping. Currently, over half of women and about two-thirds of men are either overweight or obese.

Being overweight or obese also increases the risk of developing heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis. Obesity causes about 18 million sick days and 30,000 deaths a year in England alone.

Three top international speakers will address these issues at The Dairy UK Obesity and the Dairy Industry conference in London on the afternoon of 22nd January 2008.

Jim Begg, Director General of Dairy UK, said: “Obesity has become an issue of crucial importance for the dairy industry. The industry has a tremendous amount to offer in terms of healthy and nutritious foods and must demonstrate clearly the role it plays in the fight against obesity.”

At the conference, Dr Theo Ockhuizen will be applying a global perspective to the issues associated with obesity. Theo is a leading international nutritionist. He has more than 200 scientific publications to his name. He has served on many scientific committees on a national (e.g. Health Council) and international level (e.g. ILSI Europe). Dr Ockhuizen currently chairs several national (ROW and FNLI) and international (EDA and IDF) committees.

Cindy Schweitzer, Ph.D., is Global Dairy Platform's Technical Director. She will be discussing the key nutritional messages that the global dairy industry ought to be communicating at a time of unprecedented, social, environmental and economic challenges. Cindy brings more than 20 years of experience in the food and supplement industries. She joined GDP from the McDonald's Corporation, where she served as manager of global nutrition. There she made a major contribution to the creation of McDonald's global nutrition strategy.

Dr Michael Erdl, Director of Research and Development and Quality at Campina CPE will explain how his highly innovative company is responding in the marketplace to changing consumer needs and demands.

Michael has been working in R&D/QA related positions within the Food Industry for 15 years. After 8 years at Unilever he took over the role of R&D/QA Manager for Campina Germany. This led to his current position of R&D/QA Director of the Consumer Products Division (CPE) of Campina.
