Japan Officials Arrive In U.S. Tue To Verify BSE Safety

WASHINGTON - A delegation of Japanese specialists is expected to arrive in the U.S. on Tuesday to verify that U.S. packing plants are employing the proper procedures to protect the U.S. beef supply from mad-cow disease, U.S. Department of Agriculture officials said. The Japanese delegation will take several days to complete their tasks, according to one USDA official who spoke on terms of anonymity. U.S. and Japanese government officials have said they expect Japan to ease its two-year ban on U.S. beef soon, but the inspection of U.S. packing plants doesn't have to be completed before that happens.
