Four in 100 Say US Beef Safe to Eat

KOREA - Only one out of every 25 Korean consumers believe that beef from the United States is safe to eat. In its recent survey of 600 urban consumers, the Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) has found that only 24, or 4 percent, of the respondents held no doubts about the safety of the meat from U.S. cattle. The state-run agricultural institute said that 83.9 percent of the respondents regard U.S. beef to be unsafe, still remembering the case of mad cow disease detected in 2003 that led to Korea’s ban on U.S. beef imports. The remaining 12.1 percent said that they had no opinion.
