New plan to relieve feed squeeze

High on the agenda are efforts to identify the likely supplies of grain, hay and silage and where and at what prices these might be available.

Federal Agriculture Minister, Peter McGauran, hopes some answers will emerge when he convenes a national feedgrains summit in Canberra at the end of this month.

Grain merchants and representatives of the major feed grain dependent industries – beef, dairy, pigs and poultry – will meet to examine grain production forecasts and likely availability.

Dairy Australia and the dairy industry’s regional research bodies are also working to bring together data on likely supply, demand and prices for grain and other feedstuffs.

Dairy Australia has been publishing weekly grain and hay summaries as a guide to farmers looking to secure their feed supplies.
