Most farmers have had the lowest winter rainfall on record and haven't been able to grow enough pasture to support their herds.

With fodder prices at a record high, few can afford to buy in feed.

Co-ordinator of the Sponsor A Cow Charity, Bob Holschier, estimates 60 per cent of the cattle being slaughtered at the Tongala abattoir are dairy cows.

"Three and a half thousand dairy cows each week, not monthly or anything, each week three and a half thousand cows are being slaughtered," he says.
